Eating and physical activity patterns that are focused on consuming fewer calories, making informed food choices, and being physically active can help people attain and maintain a healthy weight, reduce their risk of chronic disease, and promote overall health. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, exemplifies these strategies through recommendations that accommodate the food preferences, cultural traditions, and customs of the many and diverse groups who live in the United States.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation developed three nutritional standards in order to help students make healthy decisions when it comes to choosing their snacks. Defined by the “35-10-35″ standard, acceptable snacks must contain less than 35% of fat, less than 10% of saturated fat and less than 35% of their total weight in sugar. Each snack in the vending machine that meets this criteria will be marked with a green label that says “good choices.” There are a few exemptions to the guidelines- 100% juices are exempt, nuts and seeds are exempt from saturated fat, and dried fruit is exempt from the sugar qualifications, as long as there is no added sugar. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation provides a printable form of the guidelines that you can find here.
